Days of our Lives fans have been enjoying Lauren Koslow as the march-to-the-beat-of-her-own-drum character of Kate Roberts for the last 25 years, and the NBC soap opera celebrated the special occasion by recently recalling a vintage 1996 clip from her first year on the show.
"When we were shooting it, it didn't occur to me that the flashback would air on my actual anniversary," the actress confesses to Metro West Daily News. "I'm not big on dates so I don't think I even realized it was my 25th!"
Koslow does, however, remember her first storyline as business-saavy femme fatale Kate.
"The role of Kate was originated by another actress, Deborah Adair, and the character had been off-screen for several months when I took over the part," shares Koslow. "Kate's arch-nemesis, Vivian Alamain [Louise Sorel], poisoned the pilot of a plane Kate was flying in, causing it to crash into the sea."
Fortunately, Kate survived the horrendous crash and, as Koslow recalls, "was out at sea on a raft, marooned on a desert isle, and rescued by a fishing trawler where she earned her keep cleaning fish including cutting their heads off, as we saw in the flashback."
She continues, "And then she showed up at Victor Kiriakis' [John Aniston] mansion -- all in the same outfit! It was a great introduction. I knew I would like Kate from day one."
Koslow has played dozens of stories over her 25 years as businesswoman Kate, but there's one that she always seems to be pining for: honest to goodness true love.
"I feel like Kate always hits the glass ceiling, which is frustrating," the actress says of Kate's work life, adding, "I'd also like her to have a real soulmate. She's had many relationships, of course, with the stand-outs for me being Stefano DiMera [Joseph Mascolo] , Roman Brady [Josh Taylor], and Eduardo Hernandez [A Martinez], who I think may be her true love."
As for her favorite quality about Kate, Koslow says it's her chameleon-like adaptability.
"Kate is very complex and she has definitely evolved over the years," the actress enthuses. "She is like an Eleanor of Aquitaine character. She'll do it all if necessary... She has a fierceness about her."
